Bibliodiversity

Bibliodiversity means cultural diversity applied to publishing. As inspired to the term "biodiversity", it indicates the necessary diversity of available editorial production.

While major publishing groups are able to guarantee a wide range of publishing offer, thanks to a huge book output, biodiversity is strictly related to independent editors' production. By supporting freedom of expression, independent editors guarantee the multiplicity and diffusion of ideas, and play a key role in defending the cultural diversity in publishing.

Today, bibliodiversity is threatened by exceeding production and capital accumulation which lead to the dominance of a few major publishing goups aiming to high profits. The term "bibliodiversity" was coined by a group of Chilean publishers who set up the "Editores indepedientes de Chile" association in the late 1990s.

Such term has been higly promoted and diffused by The Independent Publishers Alliance in many languages, particularly by the Declaration of Dakar (2003), Guadalajare (2005) and Paris (2007).
